Africa Lozano-Yarl serves as the director of the Academic Coaching and Tutoring Services program for the Division of Diversity, Equity & Educational Achievement. She was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, and was raised in east Los Angeles and Madison. She earned her BA in Human Development and Family Studies from the UW–Madison School of Human Ecology and her MS in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis with an emphasis on higher education from the UW–Madison School of Education.

She is a TRIO alumna and was first in her family to earn a college degree. Her passion for higher education stems from her personal experiences striving to provide for her family, and learning how to find family and academic resources in the university environment. Providing resources is part of who she is. She is grateful to work in a place that allows her engage with that passion and explore the intersectionality of race, equity, academic success, mentoring, women’s empowerment and Latinx rights. In her free time she enjoys reading, being outdoors and watching shows on the Food Network like Chopped and Cupcake Wars.
